Dallas Cowboys Reveal Bold Strategy For QB Trey Lance
Darren Yamashita-USA TODAY Sports

When the Dallas Cowboys acquired quarterback Trey Lance from the San Francisco 49ers, many thought that they had traded for their future quarterback after Dak Prescott parted ways with the franchise.

Now, those rumors are growing even louder.

Amid the ongoing drama surrounding Prescott’s future with the Cowboys and Jerry Jones’ unwillingness to give him a contract extension, Lance’s name is being talked about a lot. It seems possible that he could be given a shot to replace Prescott if things don’t go according to plan during the upcoming 2024 NFL season.

Heading into the 2024 season, the Cowboys are going to deploy a bold strategy when it comes to Lance. That strategy has been revealed now by offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer.

Dallas Cowboys Reveal Bold Strategy For Trey Lance

In a recent quote from Schottenheimer, it appears that Lance is going to receive a lot of reps this season. They want to see exactly what they have in the former No. 3 overall pick.

“It’s gonna be all about getting him a ton of reps throughout OTAs, mini camp, and then training camp. You’re gonna see him getting a ton right leading into the preseason.”

Fans have been wondering whether or not Lance would be given an opportunity to prepare like he was the starter this season. No one truly knows what Lance is capable of producing if given the chance. We’ll have a much better idea of those things following the 2024 preseason and training camp period.

Throughout his young career thus far, Lance has only played in eight total games. An injury lost him the starting job and the chance to be the San Francisco 49ers’ long-term franchise quarterback. In his few appearances, he has completed 54.9 percent of his pass attempts for 797 yards, five touchdowns, and three interceptions.

While the numbers don’t look great in a small sample size, there is no denying the amount of talent and potential that Lance possesses. If he develops to being the players he’s capable of being, there is no question that he could be a starting NFL quarterback.

Granted, it would take a lot of things going wrong for Prescott to leave the Cowboys and for Lance to be given an opportunity to win the job. Honestly, the team would have to put together an extremely disappointing season in 2024, or be a first-round out in the playoffs again.

It may seem unlikely that those things will happen, but it’s possible. The Dallas Cowboys would be wise to take a long look at Trey Lance and find out exactly what he is and what he’s capable of doing in the future.

Expect to see the Cowboys give Lance plenty of first-team reps and preseason playing time. We may finally get to see Lance unleashed on the field, even if the games don’t actually count. Fans should start getting excited to see the 24-year-old quarterback in action.
